Evaluation Q1

I used Camtasia to show the differences and similarities between my film and an actual film.

This is the kind of person that would watch Struggles Of A Teenage Girl. She likes to skateboard and is into sports.

She likes to listen to R&B and Pop music.
Specifically the audience for my film would be girls because our film is a romantic/comedy and generally, females tend to prefer 'Romcoms' more than males do.

I used Camtasia to show how my film skills and editing skills has improved from the beginning.

Research & Planning

For the prelim, we didn't have any sort of proper research in terms of searching on the the internet.
We used a digital camera to take photos for our storyboard. After taking pictures, we uploaded it on the computer and made the storyboard on screen.
Here are some Examples:

For the film opening, we did many research to make our film the best. We did the main research on the internet. We researched for things like the Ident and finding out what kind of a teen film we wanted to do.
Ident
For the planning, we made a handmade storyboard instead of doing it digitally. After making the storyboard, we used the laptops to take pictures with the webcam and after that, we uploaded it on the blog.

Reflecting on how my skills have developed

I did media back in school and even though i had done media in school, i never done filming. We only learnt how to make magazine and so starting the whole filming business was quite daunting. I was nervous about what i'd have to learn and felt that i wouldn't be able to do what i always saw on TV.

Despite feeling nervous, i was determined to learn. We started off making our prelim. This was pretty much my first time filming something and so i wasn't sure how to do it. We learnt the basic things we needed to know such as keeping the camera still etc.
However this wasn't enough to make sure that our film opening was of the best quality.

As the months went on by, we started learning about all these different types of softwares we could use to make our film and also give us unlimited advantage to make our film the best.

So by the time we had to make our film opening, after watching a few examples and studying how an actual film opening starts; we knew that we were ready.

Skills that i have learnt are how to use the softwares such as Motion, Prezi, Camtasia, Final Cut Pro etc.
Final Cut Pro helped me to edit my film opening.
I was able to do things like Transitions and Split Screen
I did not know how to use any of these softwares and after getting demonstrations in class and a little bit of practice; i finally got the hang of using them. Learning how to use these Apps, has really helped me make my film opening much better than the prelim.

You can really see the difference between the prelim and the final production.

Prezi is a more sophisticated way of presenting something.
We used Prezi to present our pitch about our film opening.
Not only did we learn how to use the softwares but we also learnt things like jump cuts and match cuts. This helped us make our film flow seamlessly.
Another thing that i learnt how to do is
panning. Learning these skills has made our film opening more professional than how our prelim was when we started.

Panning&Cutting

Mise en scene is something that i learnt through doing research about teenage film.
In my film opening, i have portrayed what i have learnt from research.
the character is a teenage outcast.
The use of the camera has helped portray the type of person shis.
Through Mise En Scene, her character is reflected.

Evaluation: Q1

The convention of our teen film opening was influenced
by a few different teen movies such as She's The Man,
Mean Girls and 10 Things I Hate About You.
However the teen movie that had the strongest influence
on our teen opening was New York Minute.

In this video I have compared our teen film opening (Struggles Of A Teenage Girl) with New York Minute

Evaluation: Q2

A while ago I posted a blog about the different stereotypes there are in teen films and what they represent. In every teen movie there are stereotypes of teen characters which can make the audience sometimes relate to the characters in the film.

During the opening of our teen movie there is only one character that is seen who can be stereotyped as a "skater girl" which can be seen in two different ways:

  1. A girl that is really skilled at skateboarding and using that to try and get to school on time.
  2. A girl that is lazy and leaves everything until the last minute (ignoring her alarm clock, wearing old clothes that were thrown down on the floor etc.)

The stereotype was able to be portrayed because of the key features in media (sound, camera, editing and Mise-En-Scene)

  • Sound
          - The music that plays throughout the opening matches the stereotype of the character
  • Camera
          - The panning of the room shows her interests and how she likes her environment
          - The close-up of her skateboard shows her form of transportation school and also points out her stereotype
          - The character is always shown at eye-level which means she is not high in popularity however she is not seen as a "outsider" or a "looser"
  • Editing
          - The match cutting shows her journey
          - The close-up of the skateboard reflects her style and what she is into
          - The fast-forward effect shows that she is in a rush
  • Mise-En-Scene
          - Her clothes match the skater stereotype
          - Her skateboard shows that she's a skater
          - The dark bedroom reflects her personality as well as the posters, cd's, mess etc.

The slidely below shows how all of this was achieved.

When it comes to the audience for teen movies usually the majority of the audience are teenagers that are watching these teen movies. There are different types of teen movies that are suitable for the different age groups of teenagers for example a Camp Rock would be suitable for kids (pre-teens) aged between 10-12 years old and then there are teen movies like Twilight which older teenagers (14+) are more suited to watch.
Usually the reason for this is the content (e.g. Sexual scenes, bad language) that is shown in certain movies

Teen movies are more often watched by girls as in most teen movies the main character is usually which means they feel as if they can relate to the main character, another reason for girls being the ones to watch teen movies more than boys is because there is usually a character that is the "hot guy" that most girls want to see.

The film that we created can be fitted into the sub-genre of a rom-com and because the main character is a girl who likes to skateboard I feel that the film world appeal to both sexes.

This facebook profile belongs to 'Jake' who is from California and is 18years old. In his profile picture he is holding a skateboard which probably means he is someone who regularly skateboards (just like the main character of our teen movie) which means our teen movie should be something that Jake would enjoy watching.
